Elizabeth (Lizzie) was brain damaged at birth. Despite working as a weaver in her younger life, she spent most of her later life indoors alone. Her sister Bertha and brother-in-law Herbert Birch used to look after her by providing her with daily meals, doing her laundry and cleaning her house.
When Bertha died Jean and Ronald Birch took care of Lizzie. Ronald opened her door each morning and then locked it each night after dinner.
I liked Lizzie very much and used to spend time with her when I visited Clitheroe during my school holidays. She was a bit scary to look at the first time you saw her, but was a sweet, gentle and loving person and never, ever a nuisance. It was very sad when she died. Jill Shaver née Callaghan.

Dick was on the stage for years and was a wonderful ventriloquist, he made lots of money and they were a very well-off family. Dick and Hannah were very nice to me when I used to visit them in Blackpool during my school holidays. Jill Shaver née Callaghan.
I can just remember ‘Uncle Dick’ at the limits of my childhood memory when I visited Blackpool with my parents. He used to wear a smoking jacket and a fez type hat to protect his clothes from smoke. He used to be a serious cigar and pipe smoker and used to let me suck on the empty pipes in his pipe rack, pretending to smoke.
Charles Birch.
Dick was an accomplished ventriloquist and I believe that one of his main acts was "Farmyard Imitations" where he used to imitate animal noises. "I was walking down a country lane and opened a farmyard gate ...creaking gate noise.... and there met Shep the farmer’s dog ....... barking sounds..... further along there was a sheep pen ..... sheep baaing noises.... etc."
Hardly believable as entertainment today, but a very popular Vaudeville / Music Hall act in its time. Mabel, Dick's daughter, for some years in her youth was also on the stage and travelled with her father. She was a singer and they travelled throughout the UK and occasionally on the continent pre-war, but mainly worked the seaside holiday venues especially around Blackpool until her father retired. Charles Birch.

Roberts father, Thomas was the Manager at Great Harwood Co-Op. Roberts first job was working as a Clerk in the same Great Harwood Co-Op.

Between Jan-Mar 1910 Beckett Broadhead died, leaving Irene a widow after less than 6 months of marriage.

Mabel once told me that as a child and before her father found success in the Music Halls, the family lived in real poverty in St. Annes Square, Low Moor, Clitheroe. Both parents originally working as Cotton Weavers at the Low Moor Mill. Charles Birch
Mabel was a fantastic cook. Jill Shaver nee Callaghan
Mable has the knack of being able to produce a delicious meal from next to nothing and in no time at all.
Ronald Birch
Although they were very well off financially, Mabel was very careful with money, probably due to her upbringing. When I was a child, she used to give me the worst birthday and Christmas presents - vests, underpants and socks! When I stayed with Mabel and Robert in Blackpool as a youngster, I enjoyed their garden. Robert used to grow peas and tomatoes amongst other things and I used to pick and shell the peas daily. The down side was that their new TV which I wanted to watch in the early evening was switched off at 8pm - to cool down! Also I had to sit upright in a very hard small chair. In the early 60's Mabel and Robert sold their house in Blackpool and moved to a smaller single storey house in Poulton-le Fylde. They used to love driving around the Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbrian countryside, knowing all the small country roads, stopping at village pubs for lunch and then taking afternoon walks before driving home again. Robert smoked a pipe and Mabel smoked cigarettes. She used to religiously limit herself to 4 cigarettes per day - one after breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Mabel, having been a professional singer, was very active in her local choir until her singing voice eventually failed with age. In my later life I got on reasonably well with Mabel but could never take to Robert. I found him taciturn and cold. He was also a Mason and used to shake hands with a Masonic handshake. Charles Birch
I met Robert Ormerod a few times and visited his house once before he married Mabel. Oh my, I can hardly tell you how magnificent his house was. It was full of wonderful artefacts from the Orient and Africa, Ivory and jade everywhere, beautiful books, tiger skin rugs. I can still see the house as plain as if I had just walked into it. I believe he was a widower, marrying Mabel and moving in to her and her parents' house when he would be about 60 and Mabel 45. They were actually cousins. Jill Shaver née Callaghan
